SHAKESPEARE: Bulgarian farmers are bucking under debts, high costs and weak prices. They are now protesting over what they call a lack of government support. STORY: Valentin Dimitrov says his Bulgarian farm is his life. But now that life has become a constant struggle against bankruptcy. Crippling bank debts and falling milk prices have already forced him to slaughter a third of his 400 sheep. Now he faces losing the rest of his livestock. [Valentin Dimitrov, Farmer]: "I think all the time about selling everything and running away, but it's not easy when you have loans and the banks are after you." Like other farmers across central and eastern Europe, Valentin borrowed tens of thousands of euros to bring his farm up to EU standards. But cheap dairy imports have sent milk prices plummeting. He says he needs government subsidies to stay afloat, and he's furious that more isn't being done to help. [Valentin Dimitrov, Farmer]: "The real goal of our government and ministry is to finish with us, so we don't exist and milk products can be imported. But when they finish with us and there is no milk production here, the price of imported milk will go up and population will starve." He's not alone. Angry dairy farmers have held a series of protests in Bulgaria. They're threatening more border and highway blockades if government aid doesn't come their way. [Dinko Dinev, Farmer]: "They all promise everything, but do nothing and forget what they promised when they sit on chairs in ...

For weeks now, local hospitals have tracked patients with suspicious symptoms coming in from the gulf coast. Doctors are having trouble distinguishing it from the flu. "What makes it challenging is that patients show up with non-specific symptoms. Headaches, fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, upset stomach," lists Dr. Claudia Miller at UT Health Science Center. The illness is called "TILT," or Toxicant-Induced Loss of Tolerance. Patients lose tolerance to household products, medication, or even food after being exposed to chemicals, like burning oil, toxic fumes, or dispersants from the spill. "Things like diesel fuel, exposure to fragrances, cleaning agents that never bothered them before suddenly bother them," adds Dr. Miller. TILT has been difficult to track because symptoms are similar to the flu. Currently, Dr. Miller is educating primary care doctors on how to spot and treat the illness before it gets worse. Though it's not contagious, the best cure right now is staying away from affected areas. "Be sure to wear protective equipment and stay out of areas with smell, if [you] feel sick," Dr. Miller says. "The smells are usually chemicals that can make them ill." Those who are most at risk are pregnant women and patients with prior medical problems, like asthma. 1882-1933 Yossele Rosenblatt was born on May 2nd 1882 in Biela Tserkov, in the Ukraine. He came from a long line of Chazanim and his father was a cantor in Kiev. Yossele sang from a very early age. He became a member of his father's choir and was soon declared to be a 'wunderkind.' At 18 Yossele married and soon after accepted the position of Cantor at Muncaz in Hungary. This position he obtained against the competition of 40 other Chazanim. From there he went to Pressburg, where he officiated for five years and during this period, he began to publish his numerous synagogal compositions. He then stayed for six years in Hamburg and, according to his account, tried to run away to America. However he was 'overtaken on the steamer and brought back like a criminal.' When he eventually did arrive in the States in 1912, he was immediately engaged by the Congregation Ohab Zedek in New York and his fame soon grew. He recorded for various phonograph companies and this undoubtedly was influential in ensuring that his name spread all over the country. After appearing in a particularly successful concert in Chicago, Yossele was offered $1000 per night to sing in opera. However, so great was his love for Yiddishkeit, that he turned it down. In 1922 he was persuaded to enter into a business deal that left him bankrupt. This forced him to give up the pulpit and concentrate on concertising, in which there was the opportunity for him to make much larger sums of money, and so he made ...

Although Lehar wrote numerous operettas, nothing ever again in his career approached the level of his first work, The Merry Widow (Die Lustige Witwe). Comic Opera Guild produced this popular show three times, combining a new book with the original Adrian Ross English lyrics. The 1984 performance stood out for the quality of its cast. Because affordable video technology was still primitive at this time, the shows images had a hazy quality. If, in watching, the viewer imagines seeing the show in a dream sequence, the performances will stand out amid the gossamer. Danilo (Matt Carey) is summoned by Baron Zeta to help the fatherland stay out of bankruptcy (a situation certainly relevant today). He has come directly from his usual hangout, Maxims restaurant, and is so upset at being dragged away that he brings some of the grisettes with him. The oil is engulfing species all of kinds including the endangered kind. Hundreds of sea turtles have already died on slimy shores. It's become a daily routine for Debbie Sobel and other volunteers of the Sea Turtle Conservation League of Singer Island. Each morning she walks up and down 1.2 miles of beach checking out marked sea turtles nests and searching for new ones. "We count all the new nests, all the false crawls. We take care of all the hatchlings and make sure they're not disoriented." It's a tough job during the eight-month nesting season. Eggs are in danger of being destroyed by water, beach chairs and careless people. "If we didn't have the stakes here, you can walk right by this and not know until it hatches that there was a nest here." And hatchlings are in danger of dying when led away from the water by bright lights. But this year, there's even a bigger concern to sea turtle conservationists. The gushing oil in the Gulf could soon show up here. "We're sick about it. I have goose bumps even talking about it. It's horrific; the turtles will suffer terribly. They have to come up and breath air." In the Gulf, wildlife groups have already collected 374 sea turtles affected by the oil; of those collected, 315 were dead. "We're in the biggest sea turtle nesting area in the United States and the second largest Loggerhead nesting in the world." That's why volunteers with the Conservation League of Singer Island all recently took online courses on how to help ...
